MathWe recently began Module 4: Division and Multiplication of Fractions! The class as a whole did an awesome job on their first exit ticket quiz last week :) The mid module test will be in about 2 weeks! I will also be emailing some parent tip sheets if you would like to take a look to see how you can help your student at home. ELAThe class did very well on their first opinion essay! I have inputted their scores for that assignment on Powerschool and left comments on their GoogleDoc to save paper. We will begin working on their last essay for this unit in about 2 weeks or so. I look forward to reading about their opinions on our novel, The River Between Us. After this unit we will begin our research unit called "Breaking Barriers". Students will learn about how people have broken down barriers in their sports. For example, Jackie Robinson and how he broke the color barrier in Major League Baseball. Social Studies/ ReligionWe will be continuing on with the Colonial time period and beginning to learn about how the early Colonists created their own government and what that means for their future with England. In religion we are focusing on Lent and continuing to learn about forgiveness. Not only receiving it from God but from others and also how we can forgive others. ScienceIn Science we have finished our Sun & Earth unit! I will be providing the class with a study guide this week and their test will be March 13th. In our next unit we will be learning about mixtures and solutions! In our first experiment we will be making explosions in a bag :) Important Dates3/05: End of Trimester 2

MathWe are continuing with adding and subtracting fractions through the month of February! The class did very well on their Mid Module tests :) We should be finishing Module 3 by the end of the month. Module 4 we will be moving on to multiplying and dividing fractions. ELAAs we finish learning about boy soldiers in the Civil War the class will be writing an opinion paragraph about if they think participating in the Civil War helped or hurt the boy soldiers. In about 2 weeks or so we will begin reading our next novel, The River Between Us. Social Studies & ScienceWe are wrapping up our Explorers unit and the class will begin working on their Explorer project. Each student will select an explorer to report on. They will do research to find the country they sailed for, voyages taken, and places discovered. Students will be required to put this information on a figure (supplied by me) and decorate it to reflect the likeness of their explorer. They will be given class time to work on this project but it may take some time at home to complete. In science we are almost done with our Earth, Moon, and Sun unit! We should be wrapping it up this month and then will be ready to move on to Mixtures and Solutions. Important Dates2/6: January Awards

This unit is focusing on opinion/ argumentative writing. This unit is also discussing the topic of slavery in the United States and the Civil War. We have started reading excerpts from the text "The Boys War" to learn background knowledge about the war before we begin reading our second novel, "The River Between Us". MathWe have begun Module 3 in math! This unit focuses on adding and subtracting fractions. We have begun the unit working with manipulative and real life parts/wholes such as Hershey bars and Kit-Kats. For the next few weeks we will be focusing on creating like fractions and recognizing when to turn an improper fraction into a mixed number. This unit can be difficult for students so it is beneficial for you to check in with them when they are working on homework! Social StudiesWe are continuing with our Explorers unit! We are currently focusing on Ferdinand Magellan and his journey around the world. In regards to our next unit (Colonial Times), there are still 3 spots available for parent volunteers to help with our in class Colonial activities. Please sign up and help if you can! ScienceWe are moving on to our next unit where we will be learning about the earth, moon, and sun. During this time students will be learning about the earths rotation and orbit, phases of the moon, constellations, gravity, and even the possibility of life on other planets! They worked very hard on their first formal essay and I am very proud of their work. We are now moving on to our second unit which will be covering opinion writing! This unit is a very interesting unit where the class will learn about the Civil War and the topic of slavery. MathWe will be wrapping up Module 2 on Monday December 9th with the End of Module test. Our next unit will be everyones favorite... FRACTIONS! We will spend the remainder of December review previous material due to the hectic nature of the month and will begin with Module 3 when we return from break in January. Social StudiesWe have finally completed our Native American unit! The class did an amazing job on their projects and presentations. In our next unit we will be learning about the first explorers and their discoveries before moving into Colonial times. I will have a Sign-Up genius sent out in January of dates and times that we will be doing the Colonial activities in class and if we need any supplies. We should also be finishing up our novel, Thunder Rolling in the Mountains. I am confident that the class will be able to have their first essay completed before Christmas break! Once we begin the drafting process I will send out an email letting you know. It would be a great help to me if you could review their work and check for simple grammar and punctuation errors and discuss it with them! MathWe just finished the first half of Module 2! For the second half of the module we will be focusing on division of decimals. Division can often be difficult for students so ask them about their homework and give it a quick look! If your student is struggling with homework please let me know so I can check in with them the following class. ReligionThe class was just assigned their Cereal Box Saint Project! The class will be creating a cereal box with information about their Faith Family Saint. All of the information is on the print out that I handed out today in class. It should be in their portfolios. Most if not all of the work will be done in class. Social StudiesIn Social Studies we are continuing with the Native American Tribe Project! This is a very fun and challenging project. Some of the materials will need to be created at home. Please make sure to check in with your student! Have your student at school no later than 7:45AM 11/25-11/29: Thanksgiving Break ELAWe are still making our way through the novel Thunder Rolling in the Mountains! We will be picking up the pace with reading in class and their will be some reading assignments in the coming weeks. The class has submitted their final drafts of their contrast paragraph after receiving comments from me. They are looking great! When we begin our first essay in November/December please make sure you are supporting your student and reading their essay to double check spelling, grammar and punctuation. It saves me HOURS! MathWe have begun Module 2 in math and the class is doing well. We are currently focusing on multiplication of whole numbers and will be moving on to division of whole numbers soon. Please make sure that your student is completing their Zearn and Homework assignments as they show me how the class as a whole is doing and indicated to me if we need to slow down or go back to take another look at a certain concept. Social StudiesWe are continuing with Native Americans and will be covering this topic through Week 5 of our Studies Weekly magazines. After Week 5 the class will be assigned their Native American Tribe project where they will create their own tribes and materials. Information about the project will be discussed in class and brought home when it is assigned. I love this project because the students have enjoyed it in the past and it allows them to be creative! The class is very excited to learn more about this project! ScienceI have finished grading the classes first science test and they will be getting them back on Friday. We are now moving on to plant systems looking at wheat plants, then animal systems, then systems of the human body. I will be taking pictures and updating my website so you can see all the fun! To prepare we are learning about their culture, lifestyle and homelands. The students are also learning how to write formal paragraphs to prepare for our first essay that will be completed at the end of the novel. Students have learned how to annotate as they read and interact with the text! All of these skills are vital to entering Junior High next year. MathThe class just received their first Mid Module test back and overall they did a great job! We will be continuing with the rest of Module 1 and will take the End of Module test end of September or early October. If students have questions please let me know and we can spend some time together before/after school if necessary. Social StudiesWe are continuing with Native Americans and will be covering this topic through Week 5 of our Studies Weekly magazines. We are currently learning about women breaking stereotypes with the #playlikeagirl campaign and also learning about influential women such as Bobbi Gibb and Billie Jean King. Social Studies: We are moving on Revolutionary times! We will be starting with Week 19 and the Boston Tea Party. The class is loving how they "spilled the tea" back in history! Math: We are now on Module 5! The class will be working with Volume and Area of shapes. I am hoping to complete this module by the end of the year. Science: We are still working with mixtures and solutions until the end of the year. Before break students learned the differences between a mixture and solution. They also learned how to separate a salt water solution. Colonial DayThank you all so much for helping make this years Colonial Day a success! MathThis week have begun working on FRACTIONS! This is typically a difficult unit for 5th graders so please make sure that your student is completing all assignments and asking for help whenever it is needed!
